  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes Thinly sliced
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese Feel free to mix with Gruyère or Parmesan
  • 2 cups heavy cream Can use whole milk in a pinch

  • 2 cloves garlic Minced for flavor

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Thinly slice your potatoes, about 1/8 inch thick, ensuring uniformity for even cooking.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
  4. Whisk in the cream and season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  5. Grease a baking dish with butter and layer the sliced potatoes with the cheese sauce and cheese, repeating until all ingredients are used. Finish with a generous cheese layer.
Baking
  1. Cover the dish with foil and bake for about 45 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until golden and bubbly.

Notes

This dish is versatile and pairs well with roasted chicken or steaks. Add fresh herbs for garnish and balance with a salad. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to three days or freeze for a month. Reheat in a 350°F (175°C) oven for best results, adding cheese on top.
