Ingredients
  

For the blooming onion
  • 1 large large onion Yellow onion is classic, but can substitute with red or sweet Vidalia.
  • 1 cup flour Utilize for coating.
  • 1 teaspoon paprika For seasoning.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder For added flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 large eggs Beaten for coating.
  • 1 cup bread crumbs For a crispy outer layer.
  • as needed oil Oil for brushing To enhance grilling.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
  2. Slice the onion from the root end down into 16-20 petals, being careful not to cut all the way through.
  3. In a bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper together.
  4. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs until smooth.
  5. Dip the onion into the flour mixture, followed by the egg wash, and then coat with bread crumbs.
  6. Brush the onion lightly with oil.
  7. Wrap the onion in aluminum foil to retain moisture.
Cooking
  1. Place the wrapped onion on the grill and cook for about 30-40 minutes until tender and crispy.
  2. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Consider adding cayenne pepper for heat or fresh herbs for extra flavor. For dipping sauces, a creamy garlic aioli or spicy chipotle dip works well. Grilled veggies or potato wedges are excellent sides.
